Writing on the walls
HOPE Campaign was excited to get to participate in the first Writing on the Walls. This is an annual series of collaborative public art installations and events. At the inaugural event in March 2020, local, national, and international artists simultaneously created two new landmarks in downtown Austin. Writing on the Walls was created by the Austin Downtown Alliance Foundation.
Canadian artist Sandra Chevrier collaborated with American street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey on an iconic 12-story mural that was painted on the west side of The LINE. The design fuses both of their styles and incorporates iconography that evokes the power of women and the history of women’s rights in this country. Austin-based emerging Artist Sadé Lawson created a bold, large scale mural on South Lamar exemplifying her fresh and unique style exploring identity and mental health.
HOPE Campaign curated and produced two events during Writing on the Walls a Murals & Mentor pop up at Republic Square Park and A Spray Party at The Line Hotel. During the two events we curated twelve artists to create large scale public murals for the community to enjoy. We invited local youth groups such CASA House of Travis County, and Open Heart Gallery to come paint with our artists at the park. For The Spray party we curated four artists to paint large scale murals at The LINE.
This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department
